このたび、Haghirian Art Foundation｜Art Exchange Program Austria–Japan のサポートにより、アーティスト・イン・レジデンスとしてオーストリアのウィーンおよびグラーツに滞在しました。このような貴重な機会をいただけたことに、心より感謝申し上げます。

​

ウィーンでは、美術館や博物館を巡りながら、ハプスブルク時代に育まれた多様な文化と、芸術の都として重層的に積み重ねられてきた歴史に触れる時間を過ごしました。壮麗な建築と洗練された都市景観は、いまなお「ヨーロッパ」という言葉の重みを体現するものでした。

本レジデンスの滞在拠点となったグラーツでは、世界遺産に登録されているコンパクトな旧市街を歩きながら、日々制作に向き合いました。シュロスベルクの時計塔から見下ろすノスタルジックな街並みは、中世へと時間が巻き戻ったかのような感覚を呼び起こします。また、歴史的建築群のあいだに突如として現れる前衛的な建築の存在も、この街ならではの魅力として強く印象に残りました。

滞在期間中にはイタリアにも足を延ばしました。フィレンツェではウフィツィ美術館を中心にメディチ家のコレクションや街並みを堪能し、続いてローマおよびバチカンを訪問しました。バチカン美術館やシスティーナ礼拝堂、サン・ピエトロ大聖堂、そしてローマの都市空間を巡り、これまで教科書や図録を通して親しんできた数々の名作や壮大な建築を、実際のスケールと空気のなかで体験することができました。「本物に触れる」という行為がもつ重要性をあらためて身体で実感する時間でした。​

オーストリアにおけるハプスブルク家の文化と、イタリアやバチカン、メディチ家に象徴されるカトリック圏の文化。その違いと連なりを自身の移動と体験を通して辿ることで、ヨーロッパ美術の起源と奥行きについて、改めて考える契機となりました。

イタリアからグラーツに戻ってからは、制作の合間に街を散策したり、公園で過ごしたりしながら、静かな時間を重ねました。また、ハギリアン・アート・ファンデーション代表のパリッサ・ハギリアンさんのご推薦により、シュタイアーマルク州のアイゼンエルツや、ザルツブルクを訪れる機会にも恵まれました。

アイゼンエルツでは、東アルプスの山々に囲まれたレオポルトシュタイナー湖を歩き、まるで絵はがきの中に迷い込んだかのような風景に出会いました。モーツァルトの生まれ故郷であるザルツブルクでは、ホーエンザルツブルク城から旧市街を一望し、博物館や食文化も含めて、この街が育んできた歴史と時間の層を味わいました。

今回の滞在中は、一日に一万歩を超える日も多く、制作に割ける時間は決して十分とは言えませんでした。しかしその分、歩き、眺め、立ち止まり、身体を通して受け取った数多くの経験は、今後の制作に静かに影を落としていくように思います。​

このような貴重な機会を丁寧にコーディネートしてくださったハギリアン・アート・ファンデーションに、あらためて深く感謝申し上げます。

This time, with the support of the Haghirian Art Foundation | Art Exchange Program Austria–Japan, I stayed in Vienna and Graz, Austria as an artist-in-residence. I am deeply grateful for this invaluable opportunity.​

​

In Vienna, I spent my time visiting art galleries and museums, immersing myself in the diverse culture nurtured during the Habsburg era and the layered history accumulated as a city of art. The magnificent architecture and refined urban landscape still embodied the weight of the word “Europe.”​

​

In Graz, my base for this residency, I walked through the compact old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, while facing my daily creative work. The nostalgic cityscape viewed from the Schlossberg clock tower evoked a sensation as if time had rolled back to the Middle Ages. The presence of avant-garde architecture suddenly appearing amidst the historic buildings also left a strong impression as a unique charm of this city.​

​

During my stay, I also traveled to Italy. In Florence, I immersed myself in the Medici collections and cityscape, centered around the Uffizi Gallery, before visiting Rome and the Vatican. Exploring the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica, and Rome's urban spaces allowed me to experience the numerous masterpieces and monumental architecture I had previously encountered only through textbooks and catalogs, now in their actual scale and atmosphere. It was a time to physically feel anew the importance of the act of “encountering the real thing.”

The culture of the Habsburg dynasty in Austria versus the Catholic sphere symbolized by Italy, the Vatican, and the Medici family. Tracing their differences and connections through my own travels and experiences provided a fresh opportunity to reflect on the origins and depth of European art.​

​

After returning to Graz from Italy, I spent quiet moments exploring the city and relaxing in parks between creative sessions. Thanks to a recommendation from Ms. Parissa Hagirian, Director of the Hagirian Art Foundation, I also had the opportunity to visit Eisenerz in Styria and Salzburg.​

​

In Eisenerz, I walked around Lake Leopoldstein, surrounded by the Eastern Alps, encountering scenery that felt like stepping into a postcard. In Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace, I took in the view of the old town from Hohensalzburg Castle and savored the layers of history and time nurtured by this city, including its museums and culinary culture.

During this stay, many days saw me walking over ten thousand steps, leaving little time for production. Yet, the countless experiences gained through walking, gazing, and pausing—absorbed through my body—will quietly cast their shadow over future creations.
